CAO Applicants

If you have been offered a place on a course at the University of Limerick (UL) through this year's CAO, you can apply to defer your place for one year. If your deferral application is granted, your place will be secured for the following year.  

What you need to do:  

To defer your place until 2025, you must: 

  • Apply for your deferred course online through the Central Applications Office (CAO) by 01 February 2025. Late applications are not accepted.  
  • Choose your deferred course as your only preference. If you enter any other preferences, at any level, your deferred place will be void.  
  • Tick the ‘Deferral’ box on page 2 of your CAO application form.  
  • You must complete your CAO application in full, i.e. you must include any personal information and documentation which you provided with your original application (unless instructed otherwise in your deferral letter). 
  • If granted, your deferred CAO offer will be issued before Round One offers (July 2025). 

Deferral’s will not be granted in the following cases: 

  • Applicants who take up another third level place 
  • Applicants who have decided to repeat the Leaving Certificate in the coming year 

Please note: Deferrals are normally not granted for Graduate Entry Medicine except in very extenuating circumstances. 

If your deferral is denied, you may accept your initial offer for the current year, provided you do so before the specified date. 

  1. If you plan to apply for a deferral, do not go through the process of accepting your offer
  2. Complete and submit our online deferral form indicating your reason for requesting a deferral.  
  3. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via email. 

First year students who enrol for a place in the University of Limerick, and subsequently find that they cannot continue with their studies, may be considered for a deferral up to the end of week three of semester one. 

If you are a first year student currently enrolled in a course at UL and wish to defer your place for one year, you must: 

  1. Complete and submit our online deferral form indicating your reason for requesting a deferral by the end of week three of the semester. 
  2. The outcome of your application will be communicated to you via email.
